Frequently Asked Questions

Q: 1st Edition? What gives? Will there ever be newer-version adaptations of these monsters, you lazy sack?
A: I don't even own anything except the original 1E books like "Monster Manual," "Fiend Folio," "Deities & Demigods" (C'thulhu version, of course!), and a few oddities like "Manual of the Planes." Maybe if I get a thousand emails about it I'll enlist the help of a more knowledgeable statistician to aid me, but don't expect it any time soon! C'mon, you're a smart cookie. If you really want to stick Lukather in your dungeon, I'm sure you'll be able to make the necessary adaptations on your own.

Q: What do the years mean on the monster pages?
A: The "created" year indicates when I (or someone else credited) originally doodled the monster in question. Then I'll mention the year it was updated with new art and info (usually it was 1988 or 1989 until a bit later in the alphabet!). Sometimes I'll only have had a picture of a monster that I made, and then I'll mention the year it was drawn, followed by the year I adapted it for the BoB.

Q: Would you provide art for my monsters/characters?
A: Sure, but I'm a freelance illustrator by trade and would want delicious nickels for it. For a simple treatment like my Ixtar or Costoid monsters, figure $25. If you want something a little more badass, my bill will be equally so, but nothing too terrible. I can provide a reasonably fast turnaround, at least. Anyway, I'm not in this to make money.

Q: So why ARE you doing it? Why all the trouble to put these moldy old things online?
A: C'mon...haven't you ever had a family photo album? These are just old private works of mine, some of which are admittedly moldy oldies. I might even stick some stuff up here that I made when I was 12 someday. This whole thing comforts me to do. Or maybe it's just avoidance behavior, keeping me from getting real work done. Probably both.

Q: Can I put one of my monsters in the BoB?
A: This is more of a personal showcase, but I can promise that any monster I provide artwork for will be included in this compendium as added incentive for my professional services (crediting its creator, naturally)! :-)

Q: Do you even play Dungeons & Dragons?
A: Not since the big '80s, but in honor of that memory and for the sheer joy of creation itself, the monsters continued to be fun to design decades later. Even back when I did play the game with my brother and our friends, I always enjoyed preparing for the game (creating monsters, adventures, etc.) ten times as much as actually playing it!

Q: Have you ever done any real work for TSR or any similar gaming company?
A: Came pretty close in 1999 when doing a small freelance job for FASA, but it fell through. I wouldn't mind it a bit, though. Who wouldn't?

Q: Where do you get your ideas when you draw?
A: I don't sleep very well, I can tell you that much! To be honest, I don't know where they come from. I've been doodling all my life, and I've never been able to answer this question!
